With the more research i do the less the content of the letter is significant. Hoffman has argued that the letter is a love letter to the Queen from Dupin, hence Dupins eager involvement in retrieving it. Lacan, however argues that it is not the content of the letter but the effect it has that holds the real meaning. The letter has been likened to the unconscious as its content will never be discovered, and if it were the result would be damage to the self and society. Any other opinions???
